Hi everyone!
As I said yesterday, I’m answering one of the alternate questions today, as I don’t really adapt RPGs very often!
#RPGaDay 15 (A): Campaigns: do you prefer set-length or open-ended play?
Personally, I prefer set-length campaigns, because I like to plan a storyline for the group which they will follow through slowly.
I usually set the length of a campaign at about 5 sessions for my regular group, because I find that after about that time, they are wanting to play something else. Now, at times, these sessions extend because they failed a mission or went off in a different direction – set-length should not also include railroading, in my opinion! – so it something goes to 6 or 7 sessions, but 5 sessions is about right for my group when planning a campaign.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed most of the Campaigns I’ve run in the past at this length, as it gives a chance for some build-up, some distraction, even a false enemy before revealing the truth of the plot and giving the players a final rush to the final climax!
At the end of the day, I love being a storyteller for an interactive story – I think that’s part of the reason I started creating the games in the first place!
See you tomorrow for #RPGaDay 16!
