Anatomy of an Expansion – The Oracle

The Secret War is moving on to the Layout stage of development and I’m here to let you in on what you can expect to find. Keith, the artist behind the layout of our original book, has finished nearly all of the art for the expansion and is currently working on the details of putting the whole thing together.

If you’ve got a copy of the original Era: The Consortium rulebook then this should all look pretty familiar. We’ll have separate sections for Story, Character Creation, Equipment and a GM section. Of course, there won’t be changes in the rules for the expansion! If you don’t have a copy of the Core Rulebook for the game you can head over to either our current Kickstarter or to our online store to pick up a copy.

Ed is ready to tell you all that our goal is to have this expansion ready and out to its own Kickstarter within the first quarter of 2016. If everything keeps heading in this direction we should make it, no problem!!

That’s all for this week, see you next time!

Keep The Game Going! – The Oracle

There’s this point, the one at the end of a great gaming session, where you look around the table and think… “That was awesome, let’s keep going!”

We know exactly how you feel and that’s part of the reason why Ed has created our Patreon campaign. Every month we work to give you something extra, something unique. Even after the sessions you get from the Kickstarter, or what you’ve played with us at a convention are used, there’s still more fun to have!

Jump in now and you can get in on the ground floor of our upcoming Era: The Empowered Patreon. When the Kickstarter for our newest rulebook primer is over, we’ll begin to add expanding material for this game to our Patreon. Feel free to stop by and join in if you’re a fan of our other two games as well; Era: The Consortium and Era: Lyres are also represented in this Patreon. Don’t let the fun stop!

One last reminder for you today. Our final convention for the year and the last chance you’ll have to play a session with us until 2016 will be at Dragonmeet, December 5th in London. Come prepared for adventure, danger, and hopefully a laugh or two.

See you next week!

Interview with RPG.net – The Oracle

Everywhere we go people are interested in knowing more about our Empowered. They’re dramatic, they’re mysterious and they’re ready to meet the world! Recently, Ed was a guest on RPG.Net Chat. He answered loads of questions and gave out a ton of information on game play, mechanics, storyline, and everything else people wanted to know. Check here for a transcript of the interview.

If you already know everything there is to know about Empowered I hope you’ve had a chance to stop by our Kickstarter event that’s going on right now. We’ve already made it to complete funding so this Primer is definitely happening. You can get in there and pick out your rewards; including bundles with our other Era games. The support for this game has been phenomenal, thank you to everyone who has backed us or passed along the information. We’re incredibly proud of how well things are going.

Now that the Kickstarter is underway and Comicon is behind us, the writing team is just about ready to dive into the major portions of the story for the full rulebook. This is shaping up to be our largest number of stories yet so hold onto your hats, if you think Consortium had plenty of awesome content… you haven’t seen anything yet!

Catch you next week with more news!

Running Through a Playtest – The Oracle

Have you seen the new images!? Our Survival website has recently been filled out with some great location images. We’ve got dark, brooding, and desolate places to help you set the stage for your last stand. Now that these images are getting settled with the feel of the universe, we’re going to get working on the title pieces.

Excitement is brewing for this game and everyone we spoke to at MCM Comicon was excited to see what we’re coming up with. Along with more art, the next stage for this game is a really thorough playtest. Ed and Freddie have worked out a date for early November and I’ll be sure to get you the results just as soon as they’re finished.

That’s all I’ve got for this week, see you next time!

Ether is Taking Shape – The Oracle

Lewis, the creative mind behind one of our latest games, took some time out during MCM Comicon and talked with Ed about Ether. They were able to sit down and go over quite a bit of game play and rules development during their conversation and things are coming along well. They’ve made loads of progress and Lewis has even started to consider using the Era d10 Rule Set with this project. During the MCM event, Lewis had a chance to run several games with the Era d10 and he thinks that with just a bit of adaptation it could work great for Ether. We tend to agree with him!

Along with some advancements for Ether at MCM we also had interest from a new game designer. I don’t have much information just yet but this creator is looking to make a game that will combine both fantasy and futuristic elements. Can’t wait to see what that’s going to look like!

I’ll be back with more news next week!

Fired Up For More – The Oracle

The response we got at MCM Comicon was inspiring! So many people played and loved this game that we’re all getting pumped to finish the expansion and get it out as quick as we can. To that end, work is happening on the latest image for The Secret War and it’s coming along fantastically. Things are tightening down and coming together in preparation for the Kickstarter so keep checking here and we’ll let you know the minute it goes live!

Then again, if you’re like me and you hate waiting, I’ve got something for you. Head over to the Era: The Empowered Kickstarter and you can pick up either a paperback or hardcover copy of the Era: The Consortium full rulebook. There won’t be many opportunities to get copies at these prices and hardcovers aren’t even available through our website. Stop by and see what all the fuss is about with our latest game!

That’s about it for this week, have yourself a fantastic Halloween and I’ll get you more news next week!

And… Rest!

Hi everyone!

Obviously, last weekend I was at MCM Comicon. I have to be honest, this week I’ve not done a lot.

I’ve been working on a few stories for Era: The Empowered – I’ve done 3 this week. Keith has done some awesome artwork of several of the characters in the game and it’s really inspired me!

I have an Era: Survival playtest planned now, with a larger group thank myself and Co-Creator Freddie, and we’re going to see how a few hardened veterans (Uh, yeah, remember the GMs at MCM? Those guys!) handle the hopeless struggle for survival.

Finally, Era: The Consortium’s first expansion, The Secret War, is coming along nicely. I’m aiming at a completion date of the end of this year – it’s all dependent on artwork, so we’ll have to see how that goes!

So, relative to usual, not too busy!

See you guys around.

One down and more to go! – The Oracle

Last week’s MCM Comicon in London was an all-out success! I hope you got a chance to stop by our table and play a game or at least chat with a few of the great folks who were set up to answer questions. If you haven’t already, stop by our Facebook page to catch a glimpse of some photos from the event… maybe you’re in a few! We had a ton of people stop by and even got out some rulebook copies to interested players. Happy rolling to those of you who are just now joining us!

Ed would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who helped out at the MCM event. You all did a great job and we couldn’t have been so successful without you!

So many great things happen at an event like this and normally I don’t have the space to tell you everything that went on. However, I will let you in on one very exciting development. Ed spoke with a new creator who is interested in a game which incorporates fantasy and futuristic elements together with our Era d10 Rule Set. Sounds like a good time and I can’t wait to get more details.

So that about wraps up our experience at MCM Comicon. I hope you took advantage of our level up rewards competition and scored yourself something fun. If not, there’s always next time! Start making plans to attend AnimeCon in London February 2016. You’ve got plenty of advance warning so I hope to see everyone there!

See you next week with more news!

Unique Rewards – The Oracle

Have you checked it out yet? The Empowered Kickstarter is up and running fast – funded in less than 24 hours and working through the Stretch Goals! This is going to be your best chance to get a copy of this game with some unique extras that won’t be offered again.

In case you haven’t seen it yet I’ll give you a little peak at what you can find in our rewards. We have a level that will let you make a custom character to play through the campaign, and even get an image created of that character. Another of our rewards is to get a character named after you in the main book which is still in production. There will only be a limited number of these and they will be given out on a first come, first served basis so you’ll have to be quick!

We’ve got these and many other amazing rewards that you should absolutely check out. During the Kickstarter event we’re running a special competition, similar to the one we did during MCM Comicon. If you share the news about the Era: The Empowered Kickstarter you are eligible for rewards that benefit everyone taking part. We really tried to create something for everyone to like in this event.

If you’re sitting there still not sure about this game or what we’re all about, I encourage you to hop online and check out RPG.net. Ed will be answering questions at their Q&A session in just a few short hours (1:30 CDT / 6:30 GMT). You can sit in and just watch what other people are talking about or jump in and ask every burning question you’ve got about Era: The Empowered. We would love to see you there!

Until next week!

Work is Ramping Up! – The Oracle

MCM Comicon is over and we had a great time running games, talking RPG creation, and just generally hanging out with all our fans and friends. Thank you to everyone who showed up and got to know us and our games a little better. Also, thanks to everyone who participated in the online competition or followed along through Twitter and Facebook. You guys are great!

Now that the big convention is over we can focus more heavily on production of our games. We’ve got a bunch of new artwork for Survival created and they just keep coming. It’s really turning out fabulous!

Last week, Ed and Freddie sat down together for a working playtest. They took it through a rough test run and everything is looking just great. Right now they’re focused on balancing the elements properly which is a very serious part of development. One wrong move and it could take your game play from amazing to disastrous, or at least seriously difficult. I have confidence that they’ll turn it out just fine.

Back with more news next week!

Last Day at MCM – The Oracle

The fun is almost done. Today is your last chance to come visit with us at MCM and play through a session with our mighty team of GM’s. There are lives to save and Stiletto Unit needs YOU. Besides, there won’t be another shot at this until December so put yourself on a train, a taxi, a bus, or whatever you’ve got to do to get here!

This event has been a huge success so far and we’ve already met so many great people. Some of them have played through a session with us and some of them talked with us about the process of creating unique role playing games. We’ve had some serious interest and we hope to announce some new titles from those meetings very soon.

Remember to keep following us through Facebook and Twitter up until the end of MCM Comicon to get some behind the scenes info!

See you next time!

Living it up at MCM – The Oracle

Ed and the team have been working up a sweat rolling and gaming with tons of folks at MCM. The Last Stand of Stiletto Unit is one of our toughest scenarios but we’ve had loads of people take on the challenge. To those of you who managed to become legends and save 14 billion lives: Congratulations!

Back at the office, work is still going on and anyone who’s not over at MCM is busy with game production. Our Secret War artist is back on track after only a minor delay. Ed is confident that he’s going to be dazzling us with some new artwork very soon and we can’t wait to show you all.

If you’re not already, get on down to MCM. I heard Edward James Olmos is going to be there so someone has to find out and let me know! I’ll see you next week for more news.

Setting up for the Big Event – The Oracle

At this very moment Ed is unpacking boxes, setting up posters, laying out rulebooks, and warming the dice! This is it, we’re nearing zero hour at MCM Comicon in London. I hope you’ve got your tickets ready and a few of your best friends lined up to come with you for this one of a kind event.

Remember that you can still join in on the fun through our online competition. The post will be going up on Facebook at 9:00am tomorrow so set your alarm and set your neighbors while you’re at it. The more people we can get to join us the bigger the rewards will be and they’re for everyone!

You can download them free while they’re available the next 48 hours. Whether you’re going in on the competition or not you should keep checking out our Facebook page and Twitter during the MCM event as we’ll be posting news and hopefully photos all through the weekend. As you may have already guessed there will be no Friday post tomorrow from Ed. He sends his apologies and looks forward to sharing news with you next week.

Last but by no means least… Era: The Empowered Kickstarter launched yesterday!

If you haven’t heard of this game yet you’re about to be impressed. Era: The Empowered is Ed’s next full depth game. It balances superpower mechanics, a complex history written with more stories than Era: The Consortium, and a large collection of unique artwork all while using our intuitive Era d10 rule set.

I know you’re gonna love it so go check out the Kickstarter and all our redesigned reward levels. We’ve got combo bundles, personalized artwork and characters as well a whole ton of other things. Don’t just stand there, get going!

See you next week

Something New! – The Oracle

Do you want to play Era: The Empowered yourself? Now’s your chance! The Kickstarter has started and it’s now your chance to not only grab the game but all kinds of goodies we’re offering, from wallpapers to custom characters that Ed will create himself!

Ed will be doing a Q&A on the 26th October at the RPG.net Chatrooms at 1:30pm CDT (7:30 BST)… if you want to know more about Era: The Empowered, what it is or where it is going, there’s no better place to go than there!

As if that’s not enough, I’ve got more brilliant news for you today: Ed has done it again! He’s come up with a great new item to bring to MCM Comicon.

Some of you may remember the session map that we created for Era: The Consortium. It’s a wonderful tool and we liked using it so much that Ed’s had one made for Era: The Empowered as well. The map will let you get a better handle on where you’re playing and help you get immersed in the world of the game.

We’re trying to rush production and hope to have it ready for use at MCM this weekend. You are coming right? We look forward to running this and all our other available games during the 3-day event so get your tickets, grab a friend and head over to see us at the Shades of Vengeance table (1440, slightly in from S8)! We’ll be waiting.

I’ll be back next week with more news.

Help is on the way! – The Oracle

Surviving day to day is dangerous and unpredictable. You’ve got have something to guide you to safety which is why Era: Survival is so important. When the coming Infected apocalypse drops down on us you want to be the one who knows what to do.

Someone out there knows how important this game is, or at least knows how much fun it’s going to be. With their help we’ve been able to move the time table up on this game ahead of where we thought it would be. Thank you to our anonymous benefactor! May all your crossbows shoot straight.

More art will be coming soon. So, until next time… keep one eye open!

Best Time for New Ideas! – The Oracle

We’re heading to MCM Comicon in less than a week now and we really hope to see you there. Along with playing sessions of our games you’ll have a chance to meet and discuss your ideas with the creator of Marked for Death as well as Ether. There’s going to be no better time to get an inside view of what it’s like to create games with Shades of Vengeance.

Whether you’re new to our games or just getting started we’ll have loads of information for you and plenty of people for you to talk with. You can ask questions like:

– Do I need to know everything about a game before I start to make it?

– How do I work with artists and writers?

– What should I do if I’ve never created a game before?

– Will you help to make my game even if it sounds crazy? For example, “Ninja Space Cats”!

Our team of creators would be happy to answer these and all your questions.

See you at MCM!

Lives Are At Stake – The Oracle

Do you know what Stiletto Unit is? Perhaps you’ve heard us mention it before or had a friend who played our convention session of Era: The Consortium, “The Last Stand of Stiletto Unit”. We’ve only got one more week before MCM Comicon where we’ll bring it out again for anyone brave enough to give it a try.

Before you sit across the table from a steely-eyed GM (every one trained by Ed personally!) who is ready to throw everything they’ve got between you and success, let me give you some background.

The people of the Consortium live in a future far from today where the Earth and everything on it is only a distant memory. They have explored, colonized, and discovered alien races. Making their home among new planets and solar systems, humanity has built a new society where financial wealth equals political power. Among the corporations in the Consortium, seven of them, the Big Seven, share almost complete control.

However, not everyone is pleased with the way things are being run and the lack of influence being given to other alien species. In response to the oppressive culture, a small and peaceful Resistance movement forms.

As things have a way of doing, small aggression escalates to all-out war. The companies behind the Big Seven perceiving the Resistance to be a threat to their control create and mobilize military efforts to quell the rebellion. The lives of everyday people are caught between these two warring factions.

Sensing an economic (and therefore political) threat from the growing profits of an alien company, one CEO from a Big Seven corporation decided to take matters into his own hands. He employed a team which developed a top secret weapon capable of annihilating all life in the Icaunus Solar System. This single weapon would destroy the alien company and with it nearly all of the members of the Resistance, though quite a number of innocents would also be slaughtered – 14 billion lives in all.

He planned to excuse it as a natural disaster, an interaction between solar flares and the wormholes that allow inter-system travel, which would allow the Big Seven to tighten their grip on the lives of all Consortium citizens while they repopulated the Icaunus system with their own people.

With the secret help of a few other companies in the Big Seven, this weapon was mounted on the Consortium’s flagship cruiser, the Orion and made its way towards genocide.

The Resistance gathered all its forces and threw their entire might at the ship, hoping to infiltrate deep enough to disable the weapon. They suffered heavy casualties but one team, Stiletto Unit, successfully reached the engine room. Stiletto Unit is the elite fighting force of the Resistance and if anyone can save Icaunus, it will be them. With resources running low and enemies everywhere they’ll have to act fast.

Do you have what it takes to join them?

Our Crack Team of GMs! – The Oracle

They’re prepped, they’re stretched and we’re thinking about having them bathed and shaved as well. Ed has spent the last several weeks training our specially chosen team of GM’s in preparation for MCM Comicon. It’s right around the corner!

We’ve been throwing our GM’s into every possible scenario we can think of: dragon stampede, spaceship side of the road breakdowns, and surprise ninja attacks. It’s been rough but they made it and are ready to start running games. Grab your tickets now to see us at the biggest convention we’re attending for the rest of the year.

Don’t forget, if you’re living halfway across the world and can’t make it to the event there’s still a way to get in on the fun by sharing us with your friends on Twitter, Facebook, and through Patreon! Here’s just a small taste of the rewards you can expect.

The Pylon – The Oracle

There is a place, not too far from here, where people go to die. They don’t plan on dying, it just ends up that way.

The Pylon_final-websafe

The Pylon is a marker, a goal post, a flag at the top of the castle. Raiders come from all around for a chance to secure it. The overlook with its sweeping views and clear strategic location are practically irresistible. The storeroom of the communications tower is filled with food and medicine which call to the myriad groups of Raiders like a beacon. They come in waves. First one group will attack the walls, be repelled for a time until the Raiders who took the Pylon make some mistake or other. Then, in goes one group and up comes another to fight them for the fortress.

Some groups have held it for quite a long time; days, weeks and even months. Some aren’t quite that lucky and get driven out the day they make camp. Either way, most of us don’t pay much attention. If the Raiders are out there fighting each other that means they’re mostly too busy to come bothering decent folks.

Mostly.

Game Status Day! – The Oracle

It is time once again for the Big Game Round Up! Grab your ropes and saddle up ‘cuz I’m a gonna run us through the entire list of what’s what and who’s who in the game development corral. Alright, I think I’ve used up all my cowboy references for the month. So, here we go!

Coming in at the top of the list we have:

Amazing Space Adventures– This was our first ever independent collaboration with a game designer. Come see where it all began with this fun sci-fi piece, available now in our store.

Order of the Link– Our second collaboration and winner of the fastest Kickstarter funding to date. This game has an impressive history of development behind it and you can find it in our store.

Marked for Death– Recently funded through Kickstarter, brilliantly created and awaiting delivery to Ed who will then ship it out to all backers. In addition, the creator will be joining us at MCM Comicon.

Frontier– We’re down to finishing touches on this game and you can expect to see it showing up fairly soon!

Flames in Paradise– Currently in stasis while we wait for the creator to come back on board.

Collisions– In production and moving along at the creators pace.

Ether– Game is being worked on and the creator will be joining us at the MCM Comicon. He and Ed will be taking some time during that weekend to do some detailed work on the game and they’ll be moving the story along soon. The creator has said that he’s taken some inspiration recently from Era: The Empowered’s superhuman abilities rules for his magic system. Can’t wait to see how that turns out.

Eden– The creator is overcoming some personal difficulties at this time but he is in regular contact with Ed. We wish him all the best and look forward to bringing you more details as this game resumes progress.

Obscura– I mentioned a new game last week and this is it! The creator met our team at the Dragonmeet convention. I don’t have a lot of detail right now but I can tell you that the game will take place in a version of the modern world where there’s more to what you see. It is influenced by works such as H.P. Lovecraft and Hellboy. They’re currently discussing the possibility of using the Era d10 rule set for this game.

We wish every one of our creators the best of luck and may all your dice roll a 10!

A History in Profiles: Setting Sun – The Oracle

Before the time of awakening, when all Vilithii lived under the direction of one being, life was simple: act in accordance with the knowledge that you were in the presence of a living god. One all-powerful being, consuming and draining the essence of lower lifeforms. This god was self-named, Vilithii, and in their devotion all followers took their name from it.

In this way a great civilization was built and with it a social hierarchy. Collectors who were at the bottom of the pyramid harvested nutrients and through self-sacrifice fed the great Vilithii god until it was the most dominant of all the species. In a world that was blinded by fear and devotion one Vilithii named Setting Sun saw through the façade of lies and torment.

Setting Sun realized their god was mortal, made from the same mind and material as each and every one of them. Without thought for what might happen next, Setting Sun put into action a plan that would strike down the tyrant and free them all from their single minded devotion. In one fell swoop Setting Sun changed their world, their history and their future.

They were free. They were a species without a god, without direction or motivation but they were free. For Setting Sun that freedom was welcome but for many others who lost power, status and faith that day… it was just the beginning of their nightmare.

Until next week!

Generations

Hi everyone!

I feel like Shades of Vengeance games are grouping into “Generations” as I look both forward and back over our achievements – not based on evolutions in the Rule Set, just in terms of the teams that work on them and what they do.

I thought that, today, I’d share my thoughts on that with you all!

Era: The Consortium was the first game I created, it took me a long time to get the model right for a game of this sort. I used the same model for Era: Lyres, turning a fun concept into an innovative game. I’ve rounded out the “generation” with Era: The Empowered’s Rulebook Primer and the Era: The Consortium Expansion “The Secret War”.

I think the games that coming next are a new generation, not different in the way they are being carried out from the previous but different in terms of what we now know we can achieve. We’ve set our sights higher than before; Era: Survival is going include cards as a new element, Era: The Empowered’s full rulebook will be a larger story (and, potentially, a longer book) than Era: The Consortium was.

I’m proud that we’re progressing the development of our games in this way, I think that constantly reaching for a better game is the only way we can keep improving.

Thank you all for supporting us and making this a possibility!

– Ed

Rewards are fun for everyone! – The Oracle

I’ve been going on for the last month or so about MCM Comicon in London and it got me thinking. This event will be a blast for everyone who comes to see us, but what about people who won’t be able to make the trip? Well, Ed has a way to fix that.

Whether you’re stuck having to pull extra hours at work or spending your time on a tropical island you can still get in on the fun! During the weekend of our attendance Shades of Vengeance will be running a competition. Rewards will be delivered to everyone who participates and the kind of reward will depend on how many people post to our facebook page, tweet @shades_of_venge or back us on Patreon. We’ll be offering things like wallpapers from our games, free sessions for Era: The Consortium, Era: The Empowered and more. I’ll be sure to get you more details as we get closer to the event but start planning now to share the news with friends.

The last thing I want to talk about before I let you go is Era: Lyres, our unique fantasy game  of storytelling adventures. Our Kickstarter rewards have now all been mailed out to the backers who so graciously supported us. We are thrilled with the final product, this game turned out even better than we had imagined. Now that things have wound down I’d like to ask you something. What more would you like to see from the Lyres universe? Message us and let us know where we can expand the experience.

See you next week!
