I’ll buy that for a Pound! – The Oracle

Survival Kickstarter is entering the final days!! We’ve gone into DEFCON 2 people… things are getting serious. There’s no more time to sit and think about it, you have to act now if you want to get in on this game.

There are many things to love about Survival. We’ve got a unique karma system, loads of interesting playable factions and a fully developed story line complete with original artwork. Along with all that, part of the beauty of getting a game from an indie developer is that you tend to get some pretty cool add-ons. We’re not some huge brick and mortar shop who can’t be bothered to listen to the fans. You’ll notice our guru game designer and company owner, Ed, is actively involved in the comments and questions that come through from all our backers.

It’s because of this direct connection to our fans that we have made some great adaptations to our Kickstarter. Every day, new things are being added. Our most recent addition was a form-fillable character sheet. Ed has also decided to make the Digital Player’s Guide only £1. Seriously, £1! That’s like choosing between a pack of gum which is likely to get stuck in your hair and give you cavities or a solid game that’s going to give you hours of nail biting, lip chewing action and fun with friends. The choice is clear.

One last note before I leave you today. All of the Lyres Pocket Edition rewards have been sent out. Huge thank you to all our great Lyres fans who keep this small and insane, yet hilariously fun game going.

See you next time!

This is what everyone is talking about – The Oracle

Are you curious to know what other people think of Era: Survival? Ed’s been getting some great reviews coming back and we’ll share those links as soon as possible. RPG.net gave the game a positive review and so far everyone has loved it. One of the things reviewers have mentioned are our faction Source Books, a fabulous resource for getting even more out of the world of Survival. These Source Books are just one of the many rewards available through our Stretch Goals.

So, what are you waiting for? Era: Survival is going strong in its Kickstarter debut with only days left until completion. Now is the perfect time to jump in and join all our supporters. Survival backers are taking to the comments section with some fabulous questions and conversations so dive right in!

Will you be a Raider, stealing what you need to survive? Will you be a Defender, saving humanity one life at a time? Or one of the many other special groups that call Gaia their home?

See you next time!

More than You’d Expect! – The Oracle

It’s been our policy since the beginning to create the best possible game experience we could; from full sized games, to pocket editions, to supplemental comics, and expansions. We strive to deliver more of what you want in every game. That’s why our second Era: The Consortium expansion will give you more than you might expect.

Work is progressing right now and Ed is utilizing the talents of our newest artist, Sergey, as well as the original writing team to bring you our meatiest expansion yet. Not only are we going to give you an entire new playable race, but we are also deploying a host of new technology, including:

  • New weapon types
  • New ammunition types
  • Weapon upgrades and specialist crafting bonuses
  • New armour types
  • Awesome alien technologies that the Consortium didn’t develop!

Things are moving along and some time in the next few weeks I hope to be able to show you more!

Keep checking back!

Attendance is Mandatory – The Oracle

Two of the biggest events this year are happening on back to back weekends and Ed’s made plans to attend both! MCM Comicon in London takes place May 27-29 and UK Games Expo is from June 3-5th. So you know what that means, don’t you? You’ve got no excuse for missing this opportunity to stop by and see us!

This is going to genuinely be a big event. Johnathan Lewis, one of our veteran writers, who worked on the Era: The Consortium Rulebook as co-writer, as well as putting time into just about everything since (especially the comics!), will join Ed at both conventions. You will be able to get a unique perspective from John, who has worked in the industry for many years.

Along with meeting our staff and getting a chance to ask all your burning questions, you will get to be a part of both our Era: Survival launch at MCM and the first public availability of Era: Lyres Pocket at UKGE! Of course, if you don’t want to wait that long to secure your copy of Survival you can get in on the Kickstarter which is happening right now!

For you Lyres fans out there, all copies from the Era: Lyres Pocket Edition Kickstarter have now been shipped out. Check your mailbox and be sure to send us a message telling us how much you enjoy your book, we’d love to hear from you! Now all that’s left is to decide what will come next!

Until next time!

Water, Water Everywhere! – The Oracle

While everyone on Gaia lives in desperate fear from Infected, there is still a place where people don’t look over their shoulders… quite as much. Meet the Citizens of Aqua; inhabitants of Gaia’s only established ocean settlement.

To escape the dangers of living on land, the forefathers of Aqua joined their ocean vessels to create a floating city free from Infected. But, before you start packing your bags, there is something you should know. The ocean has its own share of dark creatures and unpredictable nature that threaten this safe harbor, as well as some very serious realities of living in a closed community. Population control and a strict adherence to rules are a grim fact of life on Aqua. There’s plenty more to know about these complex people but you’ll have to wait for the book so that you can judge for yourself whether their sacrifice is worth the price for safety in a world gone to hell.

If you haven’t gotten a chance to check them out, our good friends at Dice and Stuff have been running a fantastic podcast of their Era: Survival games. You owe it to yourself to see how intense this game can be, as well as how much fun! Those of you who have already heard them know that they put on a great production. We’re thrilled that they’re playing our latest game.

Don’t forget to stop by the Kickstarter for more updates on Stretch Goals and event progress.

Until next time!

Kickstarters and Conventions!

Hi everyone!

I apologise for having been quiet recently.

As many of you already know, my aim is to complete Era: Survival’s Core Rulebook for when the Kickstarter ends, meaning it is ready for release at MCM May. That’s led to a very tight timescale, between running the Kickstarter (including spreading the word to places like this) and doing the entire proofreading output for the book from 3 different people within 5 days…

The book is back with people for the second pass now, so now I’m only (!) running the Kickstarter (well, not including the work on the next Consortium expansion, finishing Era: Silence, dealing with the last of the artwork for Era: Survival and working a full-time job) and finally have time to write to you all again.

So… what do you want my next Development Blog entry to be about?

– Ed

Things we’re working on – The Oracle

Did you know that we’re in the middle of a very exciting Kickstarter event? Era: Survival is moving along and eating up Stretch Goals day by day. Right now we’ve already unlocked 5 goals which include; a map of Gaia, a new session for the quick start rules, and the cover by Alexander Brick. So far it’s been a great success and I’m excited to see where it’ll all end up at the end of the event, only 17 days away! With everything happening over at the Kickstarter it’s easy to forget that the rest of the team is still busy on other games.

Ed and those of us who aren’t working on Survival development are gearing up for the second Consortium expansion as well as a return to Era: The Empowered. This 90’s style superhero game will move back into production once the Survival Kickstarter is over and work will be taking place over the coming year. I’ll be honest with you, I just watched Batman v Superman this weekend and now I’ve got the itch to start writing about heroes and villains. Call me old fashioned but if there’s one thing I love it’s broken down heroes with a dark past and a shady moral compass.

Also, coming up in the second half of this year will be Era: Silence; a unique story with an equally unique twist to its gameplay. Some initial images and information can be found on the subsite. Last but not least, we still have the Era: Lyres Pocket edition which is still on track to come out very shortly. Ed and the rest of the team are working hard to make all these games happen in 2016 so check back often to see how we’re doing!

I’ll be back next time with more Era: The Consortium details!

Factions are like Cliques only way more deadly – The Oracle

Raise your hand if you were ever in a clique in school. Ok, put your hand down before the cool kids see you and think you’re some kind of weirdo. In many ways, surviving a mutant infectious zombie apocalypse is a lot like surviving school. It’s all about choosing the right clique… or in this case, Faction.

Some of what sets this game apart from other simple horror survival games is the level of detail that we go into when creating characters and the world-building background. You have the opportunity to choose between over 14 different factions or societies which will change the way you play the game… and the way that you view life on Gaia.

You can choose to be a member of:
– The Cult of Progression: Whose single goal is to turn all of humanity into Infected; something they revere and envy.
– The Potestates: A group who believes that the power from Infected can be harnessed effectively inside humans.
– The Defenders: Selfless defenders of humanity who will go to any length in preserving human life.
– Infected Mutants: Creatures who are cunning and use forethought to hunt and corner their prey.

I don’t know about you but that pretty much sums up my high school experience right there. I’ll be back next week with more updates. Until then, check out our Kickstarter and spread the word to anyone who likes survival, horror, zombies, or games with a serious dark side.

See you next week!

It’s all about the gear – The Oracle

Hello and happy Saturday to you! I’ve been hard at work this week writing a few stories for the second Consortium expansion, working title “The Fifth Race”, but I wanted to step away and let you know how things are going.

Right now, we’re all working on filling out the details for this unique new race. The other writers and myself ask each other important but sometimes bizarre questions like, “how much time do they spend raising children?”. It might seem strange but every little quirk and layer helps us to develop a deeper understanding of the alien race that we’re portraying. Someday I’ll ask Ed what’s the strangest background question he’s ever gotten from a writer… it might be pretty interesting.

Along with developing an entirely new species, Ed and some of the team are working to fashion new and unique items and weapons. It takes a great deal of creativity to come up with something useful and imaginative that isn’t too far from the realm of possibility. They have a whole list of fabulous things started already. If it were up to me, everyone would have teleporters and Star Trek style replicators. Which is probably why Ed doesn’t have me working on item creation.

Next week I’ll have a brand new image to show you so be sure to check back in!

An event on the Horizon – The Oracle

In just a few short days you are going to have another opportunity to meet Ed and some of the team from Shades of Vengeance. We will be attending the London Gaming Market on April 3rd and from what I’ve heard, Ed is going to bring every available copy of our games. We want to give you a chance to look over everything that we’ve created and enjoy all the hard work that’s gone into making our games amazing. You also won’t want to miss out on a great chance to play Era: The Consortium with the game’s creator.

You’ll also get to ask him questions about our latest Era game; Era: Survival. When it comes to horror survival games we’re doing something a bit different from the rest of what you’ll see available. Like our previous games, we set the focus on character building and let you explore a great number of factions who each seek to live through this nightmare in their own unique ways.

So far, the reception to this game has been great and we’re already 100% funded and moving through Stretch Goals! Ed told me that he’s just given out some samples of the game’s Karma cards to some of our backers so check it out on Kickstarter and share it with your zombie loving friends. I really think you’re going to like it.

For all you Lyres fans out there I have some good news. Not only are all of the Stretch Goals currently up on the Era: Lyres website, Ed also tells me that he expects to have the Pocket Edition entirely complete within about 2 weeks! We’re nearly to the end and I can’t thank you enough for coming out and supporting us and supporting this game. We couldn’t do what we do if you didn’t decide that indie games were worth playing.

See you in few days!

Test Your Survival Skills – The Oracle

Have you seen those little internet quizzes on social media? You answer ten questions and then you’re told how long you would live through the zombie apocalypse or some other world ending disaster. I’ve got a much better way to test your survival skills.

Play Era: Survival with a team of friends. You’ll get to feel the tension and explore your way through a desolate landscape. You’ll fight with everything you’ve got to stay ahead of the many creatures who think you’re nothing more than a tasty before-bed snack.

Now, that should give you an idea if you’d make it out alive or give up and go home. The Era: Survival Kickstarter is happening as we speak so get in there and don’t miss out on another moment of the action!

If you’re still with me and you’re saying to yourself, “Gee, I wish there was some way that I could try it out first.”… I have something just for you. Ed has decided to make an Era: Survival rules quick start guide that is available for free download! All you need to do is enter your email in a little box on our website and you can be terrifying your friends by lunchtime. You’re welcome.

That’s it for me, I’ll see you next week!

Shipping has Begun – The Oracle

The wait is nearly over! Ed has just confirmed that copies of The Secret War, as well as memory cards, have begun shipping out to all destinations. It won’t be long now until you can add this first expansion to your growing library of Consortium games.

The excitement doesn’t stop here and we’re working on a second, even bigger expansion for our next project. Ed is going to include a new playable race and new technology which had previously been two separate expansions but will now be combined into one extra sized expansion. The Consortium universe is always evolving and I can’t wait to show you where we’re heading next!

More news and updates on the way!

The Kickstarter has Arrived! – The Oracle

Show of hands, who’s excited about getting their mitts on a copy of Era: Survival? You’re in good company. I’ve seen the haunting artwork, learned some of what this terrifying world is all about and can’t wait to see it all put together.

Every time we run a kickstarter event, Ed works tirelessly to create a unique set of rewards that reflect the best options for that particular game. He takes into consideration comments from new backers as well as those who’ve been with us since the beginning. So here’s the big question, “What new and fantastic rewards has Ed cooked up for us this time?”

We have…

– Core rulebooks that come in digital, paperback or hardcover editions
– Players guides to cut down on clumsy, across-the-table rulebook sharing
– Unique Shades of Vengeance memory cards
– Game cards in either digital, shrink wrapped or specialized tin versions
– Players guide book bundles
– Bonus campaigns
– Character artwork from the artist of the game

There is so much available for this event, I know I haven’t covered it all. The Stretch Goals are set up to give you an extra campaign as well as extra books for two new factions. This is our second full-length rulebook and there’s loads of content to keep you playing for a good long time! The team has done an amazing job on this game and I know you’re going to love it. Stop by and check it out!

One last thing before I let you go today, be sure to start planning for the UK Games Expo June 3rd-5th. We’ll be there and Ed’s going to bring along copies of the Era: Lyres Pocket Edition along with all our other great games!

I’ll see you next time!

Surrounding you with the world of Survival

Ed is working hard to introduce you to the Era: Survival world in an immersive way. He’s got loads of things planned for the Kickstarter, including special freebies that will be given to Backers as the weeks go by. He’s also creating a live action Survival video. Talk about immersive!

This approximately 3 minute video short will introduce you to what life is like in some regions of Gaia. We’ll have behind the scenes stuff and if the timescale works out like we’re hoping you’ll be able to see the whole video soon. I got a chance to read an early draft of the script and if they’ve kept any of it, it’s going to keep you on edge!

Until that comes out you can get a deeper look at Survival with our friends over at Dice and Stuff who are looking at running a session. They’ll be showing us just what it takes to stay alive on Gaia. I’m guessing that’s going to include some serious throw down fights, perhaps a little running and even some hiding in dark corners. We’ll have to wait and find out.

I’ll be back with more news next week!

A Closer Look at Species – The Oracle

I mentioned a few posts back that Ed was going to develop a series of source books. They will include loads of history on each of the races and answer some of the questions you may have been asking yourself since you picked up the first book. Along with in-depth history, these books are going to provide unique Specialities, Equipment, and Rules that are specific to each species.

Here is an sketch from the book detailing the Ximian chronicles.

Ximian Brains

If you’ve ever wondered how the Ximian’s invented the technology that moved Essus, what happened on their journey that made them react so badly to humans, or what the Bug War looked like from their point of view then you’re going to love these books. I’ll be adding more information on this project as it comes together.

That’s it for me! More news and details coming next week.

Appearing at the London Gaming Market

This will be our first year attending the London Gaming Market and we’d love to see some familiar faces. We will be there the afternoon of April 3rd so come on by and say hello! Ed is working hard to make this year our busiest schedule of events and conventions. If you’re ever wondering where we’ll be, you can hop onto our website schedule of events listing. There’s nothing quite like playing one of our games live and in person with the creator so make time to see us!

In game news, Ed has found three people who will be working on a few supplementary books for Consortium and Survival. He’s gotten some great work back from them and I’ll be showing it off on Saturday’s post so be sure to check back with us in a few days.

Before I leave you today, I want to make sure you know that Era: The Consortium is in this month’s issue of Tabletop Gaming magazine! Along with saying that Consortium “has enough to run a game for a few years”, the article also says that it “…has the feel of a journey just starting”. Great review and you should really grab yourself a copy and check it out to read more.

See you next week!

Countdown to Survival – The Oracle

Launching in… 5… 4… 3…

We are all systems go on Era: Survival Kickstarter preparation. I don’t have specifics just yet about reward items but Ed has let me in on a few things. There’s going to be some free content available to everyone when the Kickstarter begins. Yes, Free! You’ll be able to download Quick Start Rules along with sample characters, all for free! I know it sounds crazy but we really want you to give this game a try because we know you’re going to love it.

The team has put together a fantastic event, using everything we’ve learned from our previous Kickstarters to give you the biggest rewards for your support. Ed has also adjusted the tier pricing down about 3 different times in an effort to give you all the best deal we can while still managing to pay our water and light bill.

I’ll be back next week with more Kickstarter details and keep your eyes open for a special Era: Survival video.

See you then!

Busy Days are here to Stay – The Oracle

There’s rarely ever a slow day at Shades of Vengeance and with the non-stop creative schedule that Ed has planned for 2016 I have a feeling we’re going to keep things moving right along from here on out! Now that the recent Secret War expansion is in the final stages and rewards are lined up to be sent out to backers we can talk a little more about what’s coming next for The Consortium.

Right now, Ed is working on the two story related expansions that follow The Secret War. He’s told me that along with introducing a new species he’s also considering adding a few other exciting things, including weapons modifications which is brand new to Era: The Consortium. He’s also throwing around the idea of combining the two expansions into one book. These would contain both the advances from the new race and something extra that he’s not letting us in on just yet. I’m not even sure what he’s got planned… Ed is good at a lot of things and keeping secrets is right up there at the top.

That’s all the news I have for you today. Stop in next Saturday for a surprise peek at what Ed’s been developing.

See you next week!

Kickstarter Review – The Oracle

Well it’s that time again. We get to kick back and celebrate after a successful Kickstarter event! Thank you to all of our fabulous fans and all the brand new followers who are joining us for the first time. Your support is incredible and we truly love making great games for you all to enjoy.

The event ended with a massive number of folks, over 200 backers, who pledged an average of £5 each even though the digital edition was offered at just £1! Your assistance helped us reach well over our initial goal and together we achieved many of the added Stretch goals. The comments section was bursting at the seams with creative ideas for memorable monsters and extraordinary equipment. Ed and I will be cataloguing every demon possessed doll, living tombstone, and invisible cloak for possible additions. Stay tuned to find out where we go from here.

On to the bit you’ve been waiting for… Rewards News! First off, you can expect to see the Hall of Heroes go up fairly soon on our webpage so keep a look out. For those of you who are looking forward to delivery of the digital version of this game, you can expect that to be available in 2 weeks. Everyone who’s put in for the physical version will need to wait a bit longer because of the added printing times. I can’t give you a definitive date on that just yet but I will tell you that the proof copy looks fantastic. I think the team did a great job of getting everything you need to play the game down to a size that’s easy to carry around and yet still has the same flare and style of the full edition. You’re really going to love it. I’ll have more updates as we get closer to delivery so check back each week for details.

If you missed out on the Era: Lyres Pocket edition Kickstarter or you know someone who should absolutely get in on this, I’ve got good news. Ed is offering this edition via the Kickstarter PayPal Option Page for the next 2 weeks for those who want to join!

That’s it for me, I’ll be back next time with more gaming news!

Survival gets the Finishing Touches – The Oracle

By now you’re probably aware that our fearless leader, Ed, is something of a workaholic. He’s never happier than when he’s got nine projects going and they demand his undivided attention. At least, that’s how it always seems to me but I’ll let you be the judge.

This last week, Ed was doing some touch up work on Survival in order to meet our “In print in 3 months” goal. To do that he spent the week; working with editors, working with artists, getting example stats sorted out, writing the Worked Example (which he tells me is a lot harder than it sounds), writing campaigns and touching up the last of the rules. He’s also made an agreement with a very special artist who is going to work on the cover art. Ed is going all out on this and I can’t wait to tell you more next week!

So, now you can decide. Is it just me or do you think Ed is a game developing overachiever?

See you next week!

Sending out Secret War Rewards – The Oracle

There are a lot of great moments in this job but this one ranks near the top for me. Through weeks and months of hard work, our team creates something that we hope you’ll love. This moment of truth, when the game finally arrives in the player’s hands, is exciting and nerve wracking. Did all the images come together like we envisioned, did the writing turn out as good as we hoped and do the players have a great time with the game? We’ll get those answers soon because Ed has just finished sending all the digital rewards.

If you’ve received your copy we’d love to hear back from you. Don’t be shy! Stop on by and tell us what you loved about this expansion. We’re pleased with how things have turned out so far through this Kickstarter and at this point physical proofs have been ordered in the UK as well as the US so we expect to be giving those a look over shortly. All the rewards are wrapping up and getting to our backers. Thank you so much to everyone who supported this game, we absolutely couldn’t do this without you!

So, are you wondering what’s next for Consortium?

The very next thing that will be arriving in this universe is our fifth playable race. These newcomers will have their own storyline, special tech and they’re sure to add some fantastic conflict to the lives of our current species.

In addition to this next expansion, we’re also looking to add some source books for each of the races in the game. We’ll have one for Humans, Eulutians, Ximians, and Vilithii. In these books we’re going to discuss history, give each of them some more unique abilities, and give you 5 more reasons to love your favorite sentient beings even more. This is a fairly big project and we’re really excited to get working on it. I’ll keep you up to date as things take shape over the next few months.

See you next time with more news!

In a bit of a rush…

Hi everyone!

I’m in a bit of a rush today, but here’s a few things:

Proofs of Secret War (UK and US) have been sent out for checking. Providing they are okay, rulebooks will be shipping very soon.

The Era: Survival Kickstarter will begin on 24th March! Set your alarm clocks, people, this is our second ever full-sized Core Rulebook and it’s going to be great, especially the cover by a famous guest artist!

I need to get back to it, the Survival Print deadline is pretty aggressive, as you all know, to have it done for May.

Thanks for reading and see you next week!

Come Join Our Team! – The Oracle

Show me a filthy rich adventurer and I’ll show you a Lyre. The Lyres Kickstarter is on its last few days! This has been a great event and we are thrilled that so many fans decided to support this game. We’ve had inventive suggestions between Ed and some really creative backers in the comments section. I have a few favorites among the new ideas, one of which are “incompetent undead minions”. These unpredictable followers would be dangerous, terrifying, and utterly hilarious.

Join us in the Kickstarter to get in on the discussion and share some of your own witty, frightening, or bizarre ideas. Ed has just added to the number of memory cards we have available in our rewards tier so if you missed out earlier head on over to pick one up. We’re making our way through the stretch goals and next up is the Dragon’s Chest story! Keep checking back to see how we’re doing.

If you’re wondering where we’re heading after the Lyres: Pocket Edition check out last week’s “To Do List”. Era: Silence is our next full game but the long and short of it is that we have many more games planned for this year and in fact, Ed is creating more all the time. Faster than we can finish them!

Which brings me to my next topic. How would you like to be a part of making brilliant and unique games come to life? Ed is actively searching for the perfect addition to our team; someone who can help flesh out our full roster of games. If you’re someone who loves RPGs and has a passion to help create one please get in touch with Ed, ed.jowett@shadesogvengeance.com Can’t wait to work with you!

Before you turn in for the night, I have one last bit of news. Let’s all give a big round of applause to Adam and the team at Dice and Stuff who have recently passed their 60th podcast episode of Consortium. Well done, Claymore Unit! If you don’t currently follow these adventures you should stop everything, get some take out and catch up on what you’ve been missing.

I’ll be back next week with more news and a wrap-up for the Era: Lyres Kickstarter!

Dice and Stuff Episode 61!

Hi everyone!

Dice and Stuff’s Era: the Consortium podcast episode 61 is now up!

Instead of going in to what it’says about, I will talk to you today about the number 61… that is enough podcasts to listen to 1 every day for 2 months in most combinations of months in the year, notably March and April.

So if you don’t listen to it yet, now is a perfect time to start! Join Claymore Unit and find out more about the spoiled part of the Hayden family!

Meet Grace – The Oracle

In the world of Era: Survival there are no happy stories and no fairy tale endings. Life is tough, unpredictable, and short. The lucky ones cash out quickly and the not so lucky ones end up Infected. Grace isn’t either of them.

After Grace’s team died horribly to Infected, she changed. Her entire lifestyle changed and now the woman who works Highway 101 is nearly unrecognizable to the woman she used to be. This world will do that to a person. You can find the rest of Grace’s story and that of many other survivors in the full book, coming mid-March!

Grace, Warrior of Highway 101

Lizards and Playtests – The Oracle

The world of Consortium is vast, dangerous, and often surprising. In the history of the Consortium, the discovery of each new alien species has been met with some curiosity and no small amount of fear. Sometimes this fear has served them well, mostly it has led to a great amount of misunderstanding and years of conflict. With the meeting of our fifth race… does the Consortium finally figure out how to handle first contact?

Humans have been introduced to several amazing alien species since their first discovery but none are quite like this newest race. This lizard like species, more comfortable flying than walking, has quite a story to tell and more than a few secrets to keep. Are these new neighbors ready to become content members of the Consortium or did they come here looking for a fight?

At this very moment, Ed is conducting a playtest with this latest expansion and hopefully I will have more news to share with you.

Until then, keep on rolling!
