Evil Overlord, Lobo Comic!

Hi everyone!

Era: The Chosen is taking a lot of the headlines this week (unsurprisingly, as it launched yesterday on Kickstarter!).

However, there’s a lot of other stuff going on over here at Shades of Vengeance!

Evil Overlord is still in printing (see below), but the Kickstarter Expansion decks have arrived with me! The printing for the Core Decks should be finished by the end of the month, and then are being rushed over to me for distribution out to all of those wonderful backers.

Lobo, our latest Era: The Empowered comic, is almost ready to launch on Kickstarter now, and it’s looking amazing. The Featured image shows you another of the pages, showing Lobo and the Empress of Bones in an intense fight!

There’s much more going on, but I don’t want to swamp you! Keep an eye out on upcoming News Posts, or let us know if there’s anything else you want news about!

#RPGaDAY2018 Day 16!

Hi everyone!

Today, I’m supposed to “Describe your plans for your next game.” As I released a game on Kickstarter, I find that question just slightly ironic!

My next game is going to be the second session of my hitherto very successful Era: Lost Legend playtest campaign! The characters managed to escape Stardust City and have fled to a… well, a “wretched hive of scum and villany”.

They hope to escape the reach of Stardust, Inc. there, and prepare for their revenge after being wrongfully imprisoned and, for lack of a better phrase, experimented on.
(That’s not actually quite accurate, but without going into details of the setting, it’s the closest I can get).

Enemies and friends – both old and new – wait around the corner for them in this town. But that’s not a problem. Right?

#RPGaDAY2018 Day 15!

Hi everyone!

Today, I’m asked to “Describe a tricky RPG experience that you enjoyed.”

Again, I am not having too much trouble with this one, as one particular occasion stands out in my mind – Con-Tingency 2018.

Con-Tingency is a UK convention run by a fantastic team of people and, if you live in the UK, I cannot recommend it more. Dave, one of the organisers, asked me in December 2017 (at Dragonmeet), if I would go to this one (in January 2018). At the time, I had a job, so I declined, but I finished my contract earlier than expected and became free. I decided that I would go after all.

That made December and early January the space in which I had to plan for a large number of Era game sessions. I chose to run 11 4-hour slots in the 5 days of the convention: pretty ambitious, but I figured if I was there to show off some games to the attendees, I may as well do my best!

It was extremely intense, to say the least. I was running games constantly from the beginning to the end of the day, and I met some amazing people.

I was told that my games were good – a few people even came back to play quite a few different ones, so I hope that it was true!

But yes, the idea of prepping for a convention of that intensity in that length of time was quite galling. I’ll be back there this year, but this time I’ve had over 6 months to prepare! With a couple of other GMs running Era games as well, I think this one is going to be fantastic!

#RPGaDAY2018 Day 14!

Hi everyone!

And another “Describe”. I think these ones will tend to be a little longer!

Describe a failure that became amazing.

Only one thing comes to mind for that, from an early playtest of Era: “High Fantasy”.

A character called up to a fort, asking to be let in in an area which had a large number of Undead roaming.

The guard (not the smartest of them all) called back, asking whether they were Skeletons.

For some reason, this player answered “Yes!”.

The hail of arrows that followed knocked a few people out of play for a while, but no-one was seriously injured. Of course, that was when one of the other players stepped up:

“We’re sorry! We won’t be Skeletons any more!”

Once I’d finished laughing, the guard decided he believed them and let them into the fort!

#RPGaDAY2018 Day 13!

Hi everyone!

Week 3 is a sequence of “Describe” questions… beginning with: Describe how your play has evolved.

My play primarily involves being a GM. I think the way I plan has changed a lot since I started creating games.

Now, while I have the option to plan sessions in endless detail, I more often give the characters 2 or 3 things to do (as guidance – a mission, or a set of objectives which are based on their personal goals) and allow them to explore the world that exists within my mind.

This isn’t a lack of planning – I would never advocate that – more an acceptance that players are going to follow unpredictable paths. If you can find a way to allow them to do whatever they like, you’ll be able to offer a huge breadth of options to them, letting them choose how to play out the story, rather than making them follow strict guidelines (“rails” is how we referred to it at university!).

#RPGaDAY2018 Day 12!

Hi everyone!

Today’s question is (What is your) Wildest character concept?

I think I’m probably relatively boring when it comes to concepts! There are so many in my group who have come up with better than me. However…

One of the early Era: The Consortium games included a character named Mary, who was a Hayden Bank accountant – boring, 50-something and terribly pleasant.

Until the lights went out! She was a Shade, one of the best operatives Hayden Bank has. She was up a lift shaft when the power went off before the other characters had even reacted, had dealt with the attacking forces and reappeared beside them before they even knew she was there.

She was featured in a short story I wrote that didn’t quite make the Secret War expansion, but she should show up in an upcoming book, which explores beyond 450CE.

That’s the best I’ve got! What about you?

#RPGaDAY2018 Day 11!

Hi everyone!

Day 11 and the #RPGaDay2018 guys are asking:
(What is the) Wildest character name (you have come across)?

Well, I have quite a few. There’s one member in my regular group in particular who has come up with gems (Martian Pants Man, who wishes he was called “Forethought”, but the name stuck and everyone refuses to call him that, anyone?!).

The award for the very best, most insane name, that I’ve ever come across, however, goes to an Era: Lyres Character: “Verity Tallman”.

Now, this might sound like a fairly ordinary name to start with. When you begin to realise that he’s actually two Dwarves standing on each others’ shoulders in a long overcoat, you start to realise how awesome this name actually is.

Empowered Update 14

Hi everyone!

Even though I don’t have a huge amount to show, I wanted to assure you that we are still working, and new images are coming in daily.

The featured image might look pretty empty (and, in fact, it is, because that’s the Training Ground with no-one in it for the “Locations” Section of the Core Rulebook!), but it represents another step closer to “images done”!

I know this is taking longer than expected, but there’s little I can do about it at this stage – to some degree, we have to sit back and wait for the artwork to finish. I could start cutting images, but I don’t want to reduce the quality of the overall book for the sake of waiting a few extra weeks to get it done properly.

I’m hoping you agree with me on that.

#RPGaDAY2018 Day 10!

Hi everyone!

For Day 10, the question is almost impossible for me to answer: How has gaming changed you?

I am a tabletop RPG creator, I’m a writer, an art director, a project manager for the books, a publisher, a distributor, I run a company which does all of these things and more.

Without gaming, my life would be so totally, impossibly different, I don’t even know how to describe it.

Tabletop Roleplaying Games have changed my life for ever, opening a door into something which I had not dreamed possible the first time I picked up a d20. I hope this journey goes a lot further, but the only way to find out is to follow along and see!

Era: The Chosen, coming soon!

Hi everyone!

In about a week, we’re going to be putting Era: The Chosen – our horror game – up on Kickstarter. So I thought now would be a great time to remind you what it’s all about!

Our universe is under siege.

Most people don’t realise it – that feeling of a hand reaching out towards your from behind is dismissed quickly and easily.

But the hand really is there. You just can’t see it.

The Chosen can, however – some quirk of genetics has meant that they are able to see the portals, see the dark denizens of another universe invading our own. It’s also meant that they are able to enter the “bridge” realm of the Lost Lands and fight back.

Over the generations, these invaders – who we learned were called the Anonassi – have been pushed back towards their own dimensions. As our technology developed, so did their biology, and they have terrifying weapons to bring to bear, aiming to destroy us all and enter Aether.

We have no choice but to fight if we want to survive.

And that, friend, is where you come in…

Era: The Chosen features new rules for the Era d10 Rule Set, which explore the Terror that soldiers in this war experience, and offset that with Trophies from defeated enemies.

You can play in any of three time periods – Renaissance, Industrial Revolution and Modern. In each era, the technology is different, the enemy holds different areas of the Lost Lands and you must adapt your tactics accordingly.

We have loads of further plans for this game as well, so don’t forget to check it out on Kickstarter next week!

#RPGaDAY2018 Day 9!

Hi everyone!

I suspect my answer to this question will be a little unique, because of my perspective as a creator: How has a game surprised you?

For me, I’ve never been more surprised than about the fact that people like Era: Survival so much!

I worked hard, as I do on every one of my games, to provide something not seen often enough – pushing it 100 years after the cataclysm, providing a huge array of factions, and creating the Karma system. It’s really caught on, and I am amazed and happy about that.

Era: Survival tried to offer something different and special, and it seems that people really feel that it did!

https://www.era-games.com/product/violete-unstoppable-digital/
https://www.era-games.com/product/violete-unstoppable-paperback/

Violete is a superhero with super strength and flight, but that doesn’t mean life is easy. She thought “the hero thing” wouldn’t be a problem apart from the late nights.

When an ordinary criminal she has defeated multiple times gets enhanced by an unknown party, she is left facing something that’s no longer Human.

How can she defeat an enemy specifically designed to defeat her?

And who is behind all this?

Find out in Violete: Unstoppable!

#RPGaDAY2018 Day 8!

Hi everyone!

Day 8 asks one of my favourite RPG questions: How can we get more people playing?

I think it’s about offering more than just one thing, and raising the visibility of the indie community. There are hundreds of great games out there, and you don’t have to play D&D to enjoy Tabletop RPGs.

Some people prefer Sci-Fi, and there are some amazing offerings out there, such as Eclispe Phase, Faith and Era: The Consortium (if I do say so myself!).

I think that’s the first step to getting more people involved… though there are many more!

– Ed

#RPGaDAY2018 Day 7!

Hi everyone!

Day 7’s question is How can a GM make the stakes important?

I have a couple of ways I do this and it actually features in one of my demo sessions, which I run regularly at conventions.

The stakes that most players care about are their character’s survival and prosperity. In Era: Survival and Era: Hitman, I work to make prosperity a realistic goal – they might need to get lucky, but it’s certainly something they can work towards.

In Era: Silence, for example, we make it so that unless they overcome the various challenges, they will be trapped for ever – something which most people can imagine is fairly unpleasant.

In Era: The Consortium, Era: Balam and the upcoming Era: The Chosen, the stakes are much higher – the survival of their way of life depends on victory. I often find that people see that as quite nebulous, so I include some specifics for them – their entire species is about to be wiped out, or they are the only gateway back to Earth. That tends to communicate the stakes pretty concisely and compellingly!

#RPGaDAY2018 Day 6!

Hi everyone!

Onto week two, and the list asks How can players make a world seem real?

I think that players can make the world seem real by immersing themselves into it. I am running a playtest for Era: Lost Legend at the moment and, although the world is a little ridiculous at times, I think everyone is feeling very immersed…

Even the pragmatic guy points out not that the world is stupid, but that the company that owns the troops they are fighting against is – they don’t look after their people, so some turn traitor, and management give stupid instructions sometimes!

I think the key is to have the players buy into the world enough that they want to make it real, and then sit back and watch as the magic happens (literally, in some settings!).

Era: The Chosen – A Story from the Second Era

Hi everyone!

I have another story today, from our amazing writing team. This one takes place in the Second Era, when scientific research begins to make progress, and new ways of fighting the Anonassi are discovered…

– Ed

———————————————————————————————————————–

It had taken years of constant change, upgrades, additions and even the building of a new section of the family home to support the modifications to the D’Aoust’s laboratory. Marcel D’Aoust had begun the whole thing with his investigation into the light rod from the Lost Land. Whilst the man was only a quarter as clever as he thought he was, there were those who came after that took his work, refined it and changed his concepts into reality.

Now Jillian D’Aoust was the next to inherit the family home and, more importantly, the lab. She was a woman of learning, refinement and wit, but most of all of science. The concepts that eluded her predecessors fell into place for her and she revelled in unlocking the secrets and marvels that her family recovered.

She put on her leather apron, adjusted her goggles to push against the silver-white hair which she kept in a short plait and descended the stairs to see what new joys awaited her in the newly renovated depths.

The old torches were gone, replaced by the soft gleam of glass-covered lanterns. These lanterns were fed by a copper pipe that ran through the wall, a feint smell of chemicals hung in the air as she stepped over to the workbench. A dozen new things caught her eye, machines that ran on a chemical reaction and things that worked using a system of chains, gears, levers, and cranks.

“Marvellous,” she exclaimed with a layer of glee. “I will be able to make wonders in here, but where to start, what to do first?”

She crossed over from bench to bench and studied them, then with a chuckle she lifted up a strange looking rectangular find from the Lost Land. “I wonder what you do?”

It had various small things pressed against it, things that looked like little rectangular insects. They in turn were resting on a brown coloured board that had small rivers of metal that wound all over it. It looked like a complex map, or some kind of blueprint. She put that back in the box for now and found a few other things to examine thoroughly.

Over the next few months she turned her hand to discovering more about these things from the Lost Land. Her lab (for it was in truth hers now) was a carefully organised, though chaotic, space that was rife with diagrams, new machines, designs, and all sorts of alembics that bubbled and gurgled with a variety of chemicals. Everything served a purpose and Jillian left nothing to chance.

During this time she recruited Carmela Romero, a young member of the clan who had been adopted when she had screamed of seeing creatures at night. The girl, only 13 years of age, had the same brilliant scientific curiosity as Jillian. Carmela’s task was to monitor all the reactions, keep copious notes, tidy up, clean, and maintain a strict distance from some of the more volatile experiments that Jillian conducted. She was also charged with operating the levers and cranks to maintain a source of power to the various devices Jillian had constructed.

“So what does this do?” Carmela asked Jillian as she slowly turned the crank in the corner.

“Ah, this, well – it is complicated. The short answer, you provide the power to the machine that allows me to begin to separate the metals from these so-called raw materials.”

“No, I meant the machine, but you have answered that question for me as well.”

“See, science, it answers many questions!” the woman grinned at him with a flicker of lamp-light caught in the dark green glass of her goggles. It made her look like a big-eyed cat.

Carmela’s eyes locked onto a large cylinder full of green liquid, it was back-lit by an odd chemical reaction from an alembic that stood nearby. Jillian winked at the girl and opened a valve. “As they say in our profession, the ‘moment of truth’ awaits!”

There was a puff of smoke, a sound not unlike a chime as another part of the machine engaged and then a few more whirring noises like excited humming-birds filled the air. In the chamber beyond the glass a reaction took place, followed by several patterns of light, bubbles as even more chemicals joined the dance.

“Oh this is good, this is very good!” Jillian moved around and turned a small dial, pulled a tiny metal plate back and pressed a button inside.

With a smell of burning, acrid smoke, another puff of coloured gas, and a growl the machine came to life once more and the object that the scientist had placed within vanished – broken down into its component parts. As the smoke cleared there was a clang, a clatter, and a soft bang as several round balls of metal rolled onto a nearby tray.

“Copper, yes, that’s copper!” Jillian exclaimed. “We did it!”

Carmela grinned widely and then said, “Can I stop turning this now?”

“Oh yes, yes. Eventually, we’ll remove the need for human kinetic motive power altogether. But then people will probably complain that their jobs are being taken by machines. Well done Carmela, well done!”

Carmela had no idea what she meant, but she smiled none-the-less at a job well done.

#RPGaDAY2018 Day 5!

Hi everyone!

Day 5 asked probably the easiest question this month (for me):
(What is your) Favourite recurring NPC?

Keelah.

Okay, I cheated a little, she began as a player character – my first one, as a matter of fact. Her backstory and character became a lot more refined when she became the Unit Commander for the second playtest group, Scimitar Unit, however.

Her tortured past as a volunteer test subject for an enhanced version of the Ximian Wonder Drug, her inability to stay away from the field, insisting on accompanying her unit into battle and her willingness to risk her own life for any other member of her team made her pretty unique among Resistance Unit Commanders.

As Era: The Consortium grew, we were able to tell more of her story – something I always relish doing, and she grew to become the kind of badass that everyone in Scimitar needed.

As the campaign progressed, and one of her people died saving her, her character grew even further. She even ended up having a cameo in quite a few different bits of Era: The Consortium content – from Dice and Stuff’s Claymore Unit podcast to appearances in various Expansions, she’s become a fast favourite of many.

#RPGaDAY2018 Day 4!

Hi everyone!

Day 4 asks: (What is your) Most Memorable NPC?

That’s actually a really tricky one. There have been some real characters over the years. I think, however, that there’s no measuring up to Monolith on this score.

The wingbeat of this character shapeshifted into a giant dragon has scared Empowered senseless more times than I can count, and his powers are no picnic, either – the ability to reverse other Empowered’s abilities on contact is not something to be trifled with.

And I’ve featured a picture to prove just how scary he is, from where he first appears in Blue-Shift #2 (hot off the presses, only the artist and I have seen it!).

Era: The Empowered Update 13

Hi everyone!

We’re still working through the remaining images at the moment, so the “only” thing I have to show you is the latest awesome artwork from Keith!

The text is now completely finalised, but the artwork, as I said, is taking a little longer than we had initially hoped to get it looking amazing. I’d like to thank you all for your patience and assure you that Keith is working through it as quickly as humanly possible.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

#RPGaDAY2018 Day 3!

Hi everyone!

Onto the third day, and we have: What gives a game staying power?

I think that staying power stems from adaptability within a game. Eventually, all groups tire of playing exactly the same thing every time.

I think if you want a game to stay, you need to have the adaptability that you see within those that are very successful over long periods of times – the huge world(s) of D&D, the different environments and cities across the landscape and different types of people and creatures.

This is very much a basis for my design work as well – Era games try to offer a wide range of opportunities, because they are the games that I play in my own time!

– Ed

#RPGaDAY2018 Day 2!

Hi everyone!

I’m back for more: What do you look for in an RPG?

I’m sure it will come as a huge surprise that I look for an expansive, detailed world with plenty of room to play whatever type of game I want.

Okay, well, maybe not…!

I love the ability to create details within a framework that guides us and shows us what it is that we can’t do, while leaving literally everything else open.

I like to run games where I never have to say “no” to a player… instead saying “You can, but you will probably blow both your legs off…” (I actually did say that to a player at MCM Manchester. Right before he fumbled the roll. Messy!).

Era: The Chosen – The Nakamura Clan

Hi everyone!

Today, I’m sharing some information about the Nakamura Clan.

Although they only join the Chosen in Harbour City in the second era of the war, they have been fighting the Anonassi for generations. Even exiled from their homeland, they had no intention of stopping and it was inevitable they would eventually run into the Chosen.

Quickly accepted as skilled warriors, they were welcomed into the group. Their training and natural ability make them powerful combatants, although they tend to shun noisier weapons, preferring to take down their opponents through stealth than through the Garcia’s preferred methods!

MCM Manchester over, more conventions coming!

Hi everyone!

I wanted to take a moment today to speak with you about conventions in the UK. As many of you already know, we do quite a few conventions here, as it’s where I live and I hate travelling!

We have just finished an amazing weekend up in Manchester, exhibiting at MCM July. If we met you there – our first time at that convention – I wanted to let you know that we enjoyed every minute of it!

If you didn’t make MCM Manchester, don’t worry! We have plenty more conventions coming. We’ll be attending the following:

– GamesFest (October) – we’ll be running the UK championship of Champion of Earth at this one, with some awesome prizes to win!

– MCM London (October)

– Dragonmeet (December)

and several more!

In fact, you can check out all of the details on our brand new “About Us” page, where there’s a full list of all of the conventions we are visiting: https://www.era-games.com/home2/

There’s one other convention I specifically want to call out, and that’s AetherCon. Leo (Head of Audio, Creative Contributor on several Era games) and I will be running games for that event. It’s actually an online event, so you can join us from anywhere in the world in a rare opportunity to play games run by us if you don’t make enough conventions we attend for your liking! Check out the event here: http://www.aethercon.com

Please reach out to us via Facebook or Twitter if you want any more information on the events we run!

#RPGaDAY2018 Day 1!

Hi everyone!

I was told last year’s #RPGaDAY entries caused amusement and insight into the way I work and why, so I thought I’d continue that this year!

So we come to Day 1:

What do you love about RPGs?

I actually get asked this question a lot in slightly different words – “Why make tabletop RPGs?”

For me, there’s no experience like telling a collaborative story. I tend to GM rather than play, so I am able to watch the players experience a universe which, until then, had only existed in my head.

We work through this story together and, while I have guidelines and goals which the players usually reach, it’s very much a team effort as we work together to build the world which they are exploring.

– Ed
